Today we are going to talk about one of the coolest bassists ever, Mr.
Leland Sklar.
_ [Bb] _ _ _ [Ab] _ _
_ [Eb] _ _ _ _ [Db] _ _ _
[Eb] _ _ _ _ Hey guys, I'm here at the Llywydd [Bm] studio in [Bb] Vienna today and I hope you're doing good.
I'm pretty
sure most of you have seen the videos Leland Sklar put online during the quarantine, sharing
backstories and playing to some songs.
So I thought I'm going to show you my favorite bass
lines from Leland Sklar. _
I want to begin with a song by James Taylor that was one of Leland
Sklar's first gigs.
It is called Woman's Got To Have It, originally written by Daryl Carter,
Bobby and Linda Womack.

_ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ [Eb] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ [Dm] _ _ [Eb] _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ [Eb] _ _ _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [Bb] Do the things that keep a [Cm] smile on her [Bb] face
_ _ [C] _
[Bb] Say the words that make her [C] feel better every day, yeah
_ _ _ [Gm] You bet you [Bb] better keep on [C] your B's and [Bb] Q's
_ [G] _ If [Gm] you don't, woman, you could [Cm] easily [G] lose
Oh, oh, oh, [Bb] oh, I'm _ _ _ a [D] true love and I [Cm] lost it
[Bb] _ No one seems to [C] understand about the pain that it cost me
[Bb] The woman's got to have it, I [Eb]
believe that I should know
[F] She's [Bb] got to know that she's [C] needed around
_ _ [F] You kiss her, you got to make her [Bb] feel it
[C] Every [Eb] day, boy, _ _ [Bb] she's got to know that you're not walking off the street
[Eb] In my opinion, it [C] is a beautiful [Bm] song and Leland Sklar also chose a really remarkable bass line.
In an interview with Rick Viato, he said that when he's listening to James Taylor,
he has two options to create a bass line.
He could kind of follow the guitar or he has to
figure out some parts around that.
And I think especially in this song, you can hear both approaches.
_ Let's move on to a milestone of music.
The album is called Spectrum.
Let's go. _ _ _ _ _

The whole album was recorded live in the studio in a couple of days,
with all the musicians playing together at the same time.
One of the things that made
these records so timeless is the fact that Billy and Jan are coming from a more jazz
fusion background and Lee and Tommy are players that came from a rock fusion background.
That kind of mix made this album really special.
Let's continue with another hero of music history.
The song is called Cat People by no one else than David Bowie.

Of _ _ [E] course, we had [N] to get to Toto at some point.
So here we are.
Leland Sklar joined the band in 2007
for the Fall In Between tour.
If you guys have some time, have a listen to a whole show from that tour.
It is incredible.
I chose the song Rosanna live in Paris because it is a [Bm] really special arrangement.

_ _ [C] The first time I heard Leland Sklar live was last year at a Phil Collins concert.
And it was totally spontaneous because a gig of mine was cancelled.
I stood really far away from
the stage, but the vibe and the energy of Leland Sklar's bass playing still came through and I
enjoyed every second of it.
I want to play a part of the studio for you, a live version from 2004
in Paris.

[C] _ _ _ _ _ To sum it up, Leland Sklar played on so many
records and also with the coolest live acts.
To be honest, I'm a little bit jealous that he played
with all of these great drummers.
And now you know it's your turn.
What is your favorite performance
or bass line from Leland Sklar?
I would be very happy if you leave a comment.
